Public Lands

Choctaw Treaty Land Returns

The historical record is offered for research, not as a completed interpretation. Names, farms, cultivated acreage, family counts, locations, treaty entitlements, marginal notes, disagreements, and unfinished readings are part of the work.

Our work remains in motion. Visitors may follow sources, question readings, bring additional records, or work from a different question altogether.

How to use this work

Read a jacket, check the historical source, and keep disagreements visible. A jacket is a working reading with correction history, not an institutional determination. Some entries are provisional or still await independent review.

The public working text is ours to offer. Institutional scan copies from separate holdings are not bulk-republished without checking the rights of those specific representations; the Library of Congress source is directly accessible above.

Internal Drive IDs in working notes are provenance handles and do not promise anonymous access. Send proposed corrections with a page and source reference to workshop@earthlyhands.org.

Source-first entrance

Begin with a historical page

These three pages offer different ways into the returns. Their names, numbers, marks and unanswered questions come before the Workshop history of who read them. The full source-facing jackets remain one click deeper.

These are examples, not a ranking of people or returns. Source observations, provisional interpretations and later corrections remain distinct.

Located working texts

Browse the research inventory. Full-text copies are released in verifiable batches; entries not yet transferred are marked rather than silently disappearing.

This search checks catalogue titles and OHC identifiers, not every name within the working texts. No result does not establish absence from the historical returns. One source position may have several readings or addenda.

The 111 received positions

OHC_2408–OHC_2518 is the received Load 1 range. Some objects represent the same historical face, some are frontmatter or adjacent documentary material, and the damaged final capture does not establish the historical end of No. 3. Numbering is a custody road, not an assertion of 111 distinct pages.

Research desk — keep a reference and explore the same source

This is a Workshop working text, not a second manuscript or an archival determination. Copy its reference for your notes; cite the historical record separately when making a historical claim.

Other working texts at the same source position

Shared OHC identifiers mean the writings point to a common received source position. They do not establish separate witnesses, person identity, kinship, or agreement between readings.
