Earthly Hands · Rough Edge · Piece 04Back to film floor

The book is physical.

Three separate witness accounts around one registration book. The film may place them beside one another without claiming that they describe one continuous event.

Visual board ≠ source image · film adjacency ≠ historical relation · physical condition does not explain a particular later absence.
McKinney Holderness · testimony

Leaves on the floor.

Holderness describes a stitched book coming apart, loose leaves reaching the floor, and his own act of putting some leaves back into the book.

His testimony does not establish the prior order of the leaves or explain any particular later absence.

Calvin H. Howell · testimony

A publicly handled record.

Howell describes public access and visible alterations to the book, including pages no longer intact.

His testimony does not identify the person responsible for every physical change.

John W. Byrn · testimony

Weathered object.

Byrn describes the book as worn, stained, carelessly handled, later wet and frozen after severe weather, then warmed by a fire.

The object's physical condition does not establish why a particular later entry is absent.

What changes?

The later phrase “the record” can no longer arrive as an immaculate abstraction. The film may remember paper, stitching, rooms, hands, weather, custody, and physical vulnerability without claiming that one condition explains a particular absence.
